We learn about genes that allow us to develop from a single cell into a complex organism.
For this, we use the powerful genetic model organism Drosophila melanogaster.
Believe it or not, many of the genes that control our development were first identified by studying the functions of similar genes in flies. In fact, for over half of the genes in flies there is an equivalent gene in humans. This means that we can learn a lot about ourselves and our own biology by studying how fly genes work.
